Abstract :
Most of us now
carry in our pockets a package of powerful sensors, connected to the internet.
These make
possible near real-time monitoring, in aggregate, of the health of our
infrastructures,
both physical and
electronic, and ourselves. I'll describe some recent progress in gathering and
interpreting
smartphone-based measurements from about 1% of the population in several large
US cities.
Managing the tradeoffs between personal privacy and social benefits becomes
easier
as the degree of
coverage increases.
